Ensemble

Inspired by the wetland grasses of the Ballona Watershed, Rob Ley's public art piece, Ensemble, is a dense, surface-like configuration of hundreds of individual aluminum tubes on the edge of Culver City's Entrada building.

Drawing inspiration from Ley's exploration of nature, the lighting concept aims to highlight the piece's theme and sculptural form. Light undulates between cool and warm as it fades in and out, mimicking the way sunlight dances on blades of grass. By using a single fixture type, the design relies heavily on the control system to bring the piece to life after sunset. Each fixture is individually controlled via DMX protocol, allowing for dynamic scene selection. Perched above West Centinela Avenue, Ensemble adds calming hues of blue during the day and gradually awakens at night.
