UW School of Medicine

This major research facility is part of the ongoing development of a downtown campus core for the University. The building sits at a busy intersection joining its twin brother (Phase 1 of the expansion) and together creating an iconic presence at the heart of downtown. The colorful jagged facade, the art at street level, and the bold aesthetic choices give a strong identity to the exterior of the building that extends to the visual palette of the interior. Within the interior, the combination of large public areas and patient care spaces required a smooth transition of light levels through different uses and multistoried spaces.
From the lobby’s hexagonal acoustic fixtures to the pattern in carpets and feature walls the vocabulary of design is centered
in strong geometric forms and bold color choices. These elements give a refreshing approach to a traditionally subdued research facility design.
